Why NASCAR is in Gran Turismo 5: Yamauchi Explains

Since we first learned about the inclusion of NASCAR in Gran Turismo 5, it’s been a source of contention among fans of the GT series.  Some people don’t feel that oval racing has a place in a series known for its road circuits, while others argue that NASCAR races will add an exciting new dynamic to the game.  After watching the video above, it’s clear where Kazunori Yamauchi stands.

It all started when Kazunori attended his first “daytime” NASCAR race in Texas -- he says he was “moved very much” by the popularity of the sport, and wants to introduce it to the rest of the world through Gran Turismo.  He also specifically mentions that there will be no NASCAR cars in Gran Turismo PSP, which makes its massive list of 800 cars all the more impressive.  The most interesting statement comes, however, when he’s asked directly if all of the NASCAR vehicles will be in the game.  His response:
(야마우치가 나스카를 포함시킨건) 텍사스 나스카 경기장에 모습을 나타낸후, 나스카의 인기에 정말 감명을 받았고, 그란투리스모를 통해 세상에 알리고 싶었다. 그란투리스모 PSP에는 포함되지 않을꺼고..(기존내용동일) 나스카의 모든차량이 포함될껀지에대한 질문에.

“Probably not all the cars at the beginning, I can only promise that there will be a lot.”
처음엔 아닐것이고, 단지 말할수 있는건, 나중엔 많을꺼다.

In other words, we can definitely expect more content and cars coming down the line as DLC (downloadable content) after Gran Turismo 5 is released (though, admittidly, that’s something which has been assumed for some time now).  This also acknowledges questions about NASCAR when fans noticed that some cars in the E3 trailer were essentially the same with only different colors.
